Our brains are like muscles. The more you use, and exercise it, the stronger will become. But if you want to obtain maximum results, you should do more than just practice. What you need is deliberate. Deliberate practice is the type of practice that stretches the limits of your capacity. While in normal practice, do exactly the same activity again and again, in deliberate practice, Push yourself to the limit. It is not easy, but the deliberate practice is the difference between an expert and all the others.

Principle of deliberate practice can be applied in the fields you want to excel in, but here I will focus on mind development. Here are 8 ways to challenge and engage your mind. Choose some of them you haven't done and take you to the next level:
1. read challenging articles
You can measure the severity of an article using Google Docs. Here is how to do:
Create a new document
Paste the contents of the article to the new document
Open the word count Tool-menu items. It will show you three dimensions: Flesch reading ease Flesch-Kindcaid class and automated readability Index. The higher it is, the more difficult the item is.
Of course, it is not necessary to measure the level of difficulty for each article that you read. Just take a few examples from a blog or website and you will have a good idea if the severity of articles in it.
2. read challenging books
Classic books are good because they are generally harder to read than new books. You can start with my list of classic books. You can also read the Pulitzer-winning books.
3. read academic journals
A form of challenging reading that we often overlook is the academic journals. There are lots of free journal articles you can read from the open science Directory. Some of journal articles in Google Scholar is also free. Go there, please select a topic of your interest and read an article in the journal.
4. play mind games
Choose a free mind games and you can have fun while exercising your mind. I started playing Sudoku last week and it was more difficult than expected. But with time got me into it and I can now solve puzzles faster.

Ideas can be any field you are working on. In my case I am trying to write some number of words everyday. Q10-first, I learned from Dale-is an excellent tool that you can use if you are an author. One of its functions are global targets that you can specify the target number of words that you want to write.
6. Brainstorm thinking tools
There are many thinking tools you can use. The book Thinkertoys, many of them in a book and the website has a collection of Exploratree tools you can use.
7. make ultradian sprint
Ultradian sprint is a good way to train your focus and concentration. A haul of a well-trained brain is the ability to concentrate for long periods and ultradian sprint can help you increase your ability to concentrate.
8. enter a project
Is there a project that has been on the back of your mind for some time? Perhaps you postpone it because you believe it is too difficult. Well, it is a good candidate for deliberate practice. We are often afraid to fail, but a mantra for rapid progress is to make mistakes and make them quickly. This way, you have a short feedback loop that helps you to adjust your results faster.
As I wrote at the beginning of this article, is a key for deliberate practice to drive your current limit of capability. These challenges will stretch your limits when you first do them, but after some time, you get comfortable with it and it will no longer be deliberate practice. Here are some things you can do to keep making them deliberate practice:
1. try to read something in an unfamiliar field reading, or read more challenging material in the same field.
